Happened to come across this at Technorati. Thought not really related to film, it is fun and educational so I wanted to share it.

Trailer: Dead Island
This is a very well done trailer for a zombie video game. The music sets the mood beautifully. The trailer appears to be made within the game engine, though I cannot say that for certain. This is probably the most emotional game trailer I’ve ever seen! Be warned, given the subject matter, there is obviously violence and gore but also in this case there is violence to a child.
I am not the only one to appreciate this trailer. It appears that Hollywood has taken notice of all the hype this trailer has and wants to make a movie based on a game that is not yet released.
The game has some interest for me. My current zombie game of choice is Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare, a zombie western game. I bought this game for a couple of reasons. First, it is cheap. This was originally an add-on for the Red Dead Redemption
game itself. They released it on its own disc for much cheaper than the full game. The full game has garnered much praise, so this was a cheap way to try it out. Second, its a zombie western! How cool is that!
Anyway, back to the trailer. The mood of this trailer is so perfectly set by the music it has lead one person to make a mock trailer using the same music and footage from Shaun of the Dead, a film I have yet to watch. You can see this below:
This helps to illustrate the power music and sound has in setting mood and emotion in film, as discussed previously. I find this trailer to be a beautiful blend of visuals and music to set a mood and I think the time-reverse effect was well used to induce tension. I only hope the game can live up to its trailer.
Apollo 18
This is a thriller movie set on a fictional 18th Apollo mission to the moon. It purports to answer the question of why we never returned to the moon. Fun premise and looks to be pretty well done. Takes the “found footage” concept and runs with it in space.
Thoughts on the direction of Hollywood film
I just finished reading this article talking about he current direction Hollywood has taken and why it seem sequels and mediocre stories are so common in the theaters today. It reminded me a little of the article I wrote about TV becoming more what movies have been in the past. In fact, the GQ article mentions this with a bit more substance than I did. Serious storytelling is moving to TV and away from Hollywood.
Studying scriptwriting has focused my thinking more on story and the process of storytelling. In the end, I am interested in telling a good story set is a world of spectacle. That is what I have determined for myself. I want to create a story that could work well without the spectacle. The spectacle to me is the icing on the cake. I’m sure there are those in Hollywood who think they are working this way, but I think most audiences think differently.
The article is work a read. For my part, I will try and keep the story strong. It would be wonderful to actually sell a script, but my goal is to write a good story. Selling the script would be the icing on the cake.
Short: 3 Minutes
This is a fun short with some nice action and lighsabers! 3 Minutes was produced by George Wang and Don Le. Its a very different take on lightsaber combat, in that its not a true lightsaber duel. So, stop reading and watch!
Music in Film
I have been catching up a bit on episodes of Film Riot when I came across this one dealing with music in film. This episode has some wonderful examples of a scene with two different scores showing how the score alters the mood of the visuals. This is one of the best illustrations of this technique I have seen.
Film Riot is a very entertaining and informative free show all about movie making techniques. I highly recommend it. I subscribe to it as a podcast so the episodes are downloaded and ready when I have the time to watch them.
Living up to the tag line
Since starting this blog, my friend and I have utterly failed to make any sort of movie. Because of this, the old tag line of “friends making films” will soon be replaced with something else. Until we actually make a film I do not believe we should use that tag line. In time, I hope it can be restored but I will make no promises. Greatest plans and such.
On a side note, I have begun reading a book on screenwriting. I’ve had the book for a long time so reading it is long overdue. The book is Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting by Syd Field. It is recommended in many other books and in many lists I’ve found. That’s why I bought it. So far, I am enjoying the book. It is helping me flush out an idea I’ve had for a long time. At some point, I should write a review, but my opinion might not hold much weight.
Vimeo Video School
I don’t know how long this has been around, but I just found out about Vimeo Video School. Vimeo is a site that hosts videos and has been known to have higher quality video compression than YouTube. This Video School appears to be a collection of tutorials about various photographic and video related topics by various people. Some interesting stuff to check out when you have time.
Kaboom
Found via FirstShowing.net, this trailer has gotten my attention. Looks to be a quirky and interesting movie.
TV is the new film
Recently it seems TV shows have really upped the production value. Shows like Mad Men, Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead look and feel more extra long format films than the episodic entertainment TV typically represents. Here is a trailer for one of the latest such shows called Falling Skies. This one is a science fiction show about an alien invasion. I hope it lives up.
