About Dan

As a kid, I loved watching how movies were made on the HBO behind the scenes specials. From those specials, I got the impression you needed huge amounts of money to make movies. Today, I know different and I intend to practice that. Google Profile About.me Profile

Short: I Paint

This really blew me away! I have recently started painting again after a very long hiatus. This video is a well planned and executed time lapse of an artist at work. It is more than the usual “speed painting” video seen on YouTube. This video is a work of itself, let alone the art it shows being created. I really like the paintings being made and the whole idea of the video itself. Trying to illustrate the creative process of this particular artist! Enjoy and wonder!

Trailer: Iron Sky

From the creators of Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning, comes the long awaited moon Nazi invasion movie, Iron Sky! At the end of World War II, when things were looking grim for the Reich, a secret space program brought the Nazis to the dark side of the moon to hide. How the Transformers missed them I don’t think we’ll find out. An American astronaut stumbles too close and the Nazis decide it’s time to invade.

This movie was made on a small budget and without a studio. The visuals look pretty good and the story should prove entertaining. I’m not sure how they funded this project, but I think it was completed before Kickstarter was an option. The film is not yet available, but I will be looking for it!

Can someone please explain this to me?

I just don’t get it. Why is there ever advertisements attached in front of movie trailers online? I have to watch an ad to see an ad. I don’t get it. If I[m willing to give my time to watch the ad for your movie, why on Earth would you attach a completely unrelated ad before or after? It makes no sense to make me wait 15 to 30 seconds extra to see your 60 to 120 second ad. Did you forget your trailers are advertisements? They are. Stop making me watch an ad to see an ad!

I could go on a rant about the ads played in movie theaters before the movie starts. Didn’t I pay to be there in the first place?

Short: The German

I’ve highlighted short films in the past for their visual effects, their creativity, their unique vision, and other traits. This film features some nice visual effects work done on the extreme cheap and overall, a good story. The beginning is familiar enough a tail. It’s World War II and a British fighter pilot witnesses his friend killed. He pursues the killer for vengeance. What happens next is not as familiar.

Review: Red Tails

I have to say I’m very glad I read this article before going to see George Lucas’ Red Tails. The article set my expectations properly and I think improper expectations is the main reason for the very polarized reviews of this film.

The article says it much better than I could, so I suggest you read it, but the main point is what Lucas set out to do with this film. Today, we are all accustomed to gritty, invigorating war movies epitomized by Saving Private Ryan. Lucas’ vision was something completely different and much older than that. He wanted to make a propaganda film glorifying the people and their service to the country. It was meant to harken to the movies made during the war to boost morale. In being so, it has corny, direct dialog of the sort lampooned in most modern films. It takes as glancing a blow as it can at the real and deep issues these pilots faced. It was a lighthearted movie about a difficult subject and I think that rubbed people the wrong way.

I suspect people wanted a Saving Private Ryan take on the 332nd fighter group and they didn’t get it. I think that’s why people were so upset and honestly, I’m not sure how I would have felt about the movie had I gone in with different expectations. I was very forgiving of the corny, somewhat stilted dialog because I knew what the intent was. I didn’t miss the gore typical of a modern war movie. I expected these things because I knew the intent.

All that aside, what about the rest of the movie? I thought the effects were quite impressive. I enjoyed seeing aerial combat so plainly. The camera seemed more steady and the views so clear. I thought the characters were strong enough to support the story. I had a good time watching the film. In the end, isn’t that the point?

I was really hoping this movie would do well. I was dismayed when looking at show times and finding the movie at only one screen in any of the theaters I checked. My screening was pretty packed. My buddy and I were lucky to find two seats together that didn’t require staring up and cramping our necks. It may be that this movie is wrong for this time. I will say, I would like to see a gritty, modern take on the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, but I’m also glad Red Tails is there as an accessible and entertaining introduction for those who know nothing of their history.

Trailer: Moonrise Kingdom

Wow! This is a fantastic, quirky bit of work. I’m quite interested to see the whole thing. This film by Wes Anderon appears to be the story of a boy and a girl who run off to be together and the search for them. He runs away from scout camp and she runs from home. The look and vibe of this film are fantastic! What do you think?

Interview Lighting with Eve Hazelton

Phillip Bloom has posted on his web site a series of three lighting tutorials by Eve Hazelton, the DOP for The Underwater Realm project. This project was funded via Kickstarter and Phillip Bloom was even one of the backers. This tutorial was very well done in my opinion. The information is very well presented and you do get a good sense of what is happening. It’s not meant to be a full lighting course and it isn’t, but it gives a real nice understanding of this lighting setup. The other tutorials are also worth checking out.

Math, Nature and Drawing

Lately, I’ve been spending my time learning about painting and drawing. I haven’t given up on film making, but I figure any artistic endeavor can help improve others and I decided to paint my first painting in 15 years as a Christmas gift for my wife. While looking for some info about the use of colored pencils, I stumbled across this and wanted to share.
