Review: Red Tails

I have to say I’m very glad I read this article before going to see George Lucas’ Red Tails. The article set my expectations properly and I think improper expectations is the main reason for the very polarized reviews of this film.

The article says it much better than I could, so I suggest you read it, but the main point is what Lucas set out to do with this film. Today, we are all accustomed to gritty, invigorating war movies epitomized by Saving Private Ryan. Lucas’ vision was something completely different and much older than that. He wanted to make a propaganda film glorifying the people and their service to the country. It was meant to harken to the movies made during the war to boost morale. In being so, it has corny, direct dialog of the sort lampooned in most modern films. It takes as glancing a blow as it can at the real and deep issues these pilots faced. It was a lighthearted movie about a difficult subject and I think that rubbed people the wrong way.

I suspect people wanted a Saving Private Ryan take on the 332nd fighter group and they didn’t get it. I think that’s why people were so upset and honestly, I’m not sure how I would have felt about the movie had I gone in with different expectations. I was very forgiving of the corny, somewhat stilted dialog because I knew what the intent was. I didn’t miss the gore typical of a modern war movie. I expected these things because I knew the intent.

All that aside, what about the rest of the movie? I thought the effects were quite impressive. I enjoyed seeing aerial combat so plainly. The camera seemed more steady and the views so clear. I thought the characters were strong enough to support the story. I had a good time watching the film. In the end, isn’t that the point?

I was really hoping this movie would do well. I was dismayed when looking at show times and finding the movie at only one screen in any of the theaters I checked. My screening was pretty packed. My buddy and I were lucky to find two seats together that didn’t require staring up and cramping our necks. It may be that this movie is wrong for this time. I will say, I would like to see a gritty, modern take on the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, but I’m also glad Red Tails is there as an accessible and entertaining introduction for those who know nothing of their history.

Trailer: Moonrise Kingdom

Wow! This is a fantastic, quirky bit of work. I’m quite interested to see the whole thing. This film by Wes Anderon appears to be the story of a boy and a girl who run off to be together and the search for them. He runs away from scout camp and she runs from home. The look and vibe of this film are fantastic! What do you think?

Interview Lighting with Eve Hazelton

Phillip Bloom has posted on his web site a series of three lighting tutorials by Eve Hazelton, the DOP for The Underwater Realm project. This project was funded via Kickstarter and Phillip Bloom was even one of the backers. This tutorial was very well done in my opinion. The information is very well presented and you do get a good sense of what is happening. It’s not meant to be a full lighting course and it isn’t, but it gives a real nice understanding of this lighting setup. The other tutorials are also worth checking out.

Math, Nature and Drawing

Lately, I’ve been spending my time learning about painting and drawing. I haven’t given up on film making, but I figure any artistic endeavor can help improve others and I decided to paint my first painting in 15 years as a Christmas gift for my wife. While looking for some info about the use of colored pencils, I stumbled across this and wanted to share.

Trailer: The Hobbit

We’re getting some great trailers this week! The first one I’m posting is for Peter Jackson’s return to Middle Earth. I don’t know if the trailer is in 3D in theaters, but that is something I’d really like to see. In any case, here is the first trailer for The Hobbit!

Featurette on The Artist

Back in August I posted a trailer for the film The Artist. This seemed a remarkable film to me as it was a modern made black and white silent film. On top of looking and sounding old, it was set in the early 1930′s making the package complete. Now they have released this behind the scenes clip about the film which makes me want to see it even more.

Volkswagen commercial breakdown

This is a behind the scenes video for a Volkswagen commercial. It is fascinating to see what goes into creating these pieces. This one was worked on by 11 people and took nearly three months to complete. Think about that for a second. This is a 30 second commercial, and it took 3 months for professionals to complete it. The amount of detail and effort is astounding when you think about it and really puts the efforts of internet shows into perspective. They might not have quite the high polish that a piece like this has, but the efforts of the likes of Freddie Wong and Corridor Digital look pretty amazing considering the time invested into them.

Star Wars vs Star Trek from the mouths of the actors

These videos speak for themselves. See the ongoing debate between James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) on which is better, Star Trek or Star Wars.

Short: Address is Approximate

This is a very nice little story about a toy wanting to journey across the country and see places. Very beautifully done, this stop motion short is quite filmic with its use of sliders in the shooting and a quite emotional soundtrack. There was some thought and planning put into this and it shows. Very nice finished piece and worth your time!

Trailer: C

This is a trailer for a new science fiction short film called “C”. What makes this Kickstarter project interesting and worth mentioning is it’s utter lack of CGI in the production. Lighting and miniatures are the name of the day and the results in the trailer harken back to some classic sci-fi films of the past, some good and some not so good. Not much of the story is revealed but the trailer is still intriguing.
